Denver woman builds Book Swap Society community across Colorado and the country

New books aren't cheap, but a Denver woman found a way to keep reading without breaking the bank. Book Swap Society was founded in 2022 by Nicole Wiebe. It all started in a park with six people in Denver. Since then, Wiebe has grown the Book Swap Society to host events across Colorado and in cities across three other states. At each gathering, book lovers trade books with others in the community and take home new reads.

As we lean into cozier hobbies during the ‘ber months, reading is at the top of many Coloradans’ lists. But the burdens of expensive new books or long library waitlists may keep some from expanding their reading logs. Enter Denver Book Swap Society. Founded in the summer of 2022 by Nicole Wiebe, the Denver Book Swap Society aims to bolster the local reading community while also supporting spaces throughout the city.

Denver Book Swap Society founder Nicole Wiebe wasn’t really an avid reader until the pandemic. It was during that downtime, she says, that she learned to read for the pleasure of reading, not because it was required for a book club or an assignment for school. She quickly became a voracious reader, but this presented a new problem, the lawful evil if you will. “I was struggling with the costs of books or long waitlists at the library,” she explains.
